2009 H1N1 Flu and You
August 2009: The CDC recommends that people with influenza-like illness remain at home at least 24 hours after they are free of fever or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medication. These guidelines do not apply to high risk groups. High risk groups for influenza complications include children younger than 5 years old. The PRIDE and Joy center-based playgroups are implementing more stringent guidelines and a longer period of exclusion due to our high-risk population.
Children are requested to stay home from infant and toddler class for 7 days following the first day of illness with flu-like symptoms and complete resolution of symptoms. Contact your physician for individual care and treatment guidelines or questions. Please notify the PRIDE and Joy Nurse or your home visitor if your child has contracted a flu virus or contagious illness.
CDC guidelines for parents are included in the links below and information regarding vaccinations. Please note that infants younger than 6 months of age are at high risk and will not be eligible for the vaccination, thus if an infant develops flu-like symptoms, including a fever and/or cough, call your doctor for medical attention right away.
Please continue to practice good respiratory etiquette, covering your cough and washing hands often with soap and water for 15 to 20 seconds. Alcohol based hand cleaners are also effective!
